Google has introduced a suite of agentic capabilities to its Ask Maps feature within Google Maps, aiming to transition the platform from a simple navigation tool into an interactive assistant. Users in the United States can now use natural language queries to perform real-world transactions directly through the interface. These new capabilities allow the assistant to handle complex tasks such as ordering food, finding and booking hotel rooms, and purchasing tickets for local events.

When ordering food, users can search for highly specific items, such as a vegan avocado toast and an oat milk latte. Ask Maps will identify nearby venues and allow users to add items to a cart, completing the transaction through integrated third-party platforms like Square, Toast, or Uber Eats. For lodging, the tool can parse detailed criteria—such as finding a moderately priced, highly rated hotel with an artsy vibe near a gym—compare prices, check availability, and redirect users to partner websites for booking. Similarly, users can search for local entertainment like comedy shows or live music and receive direct ticket-purchasing links.

Beyond transactional features, Google is launching Personal Intelligence for Ask Maps globally. This opt-in feature allows the assistant to access a user's Gmail and Google Calendar to answer personalized questions about flight times or hotel locations. The assistant also gains conversational memory, enabling it to recall suggestions from previous interactions. Additionally, a new live transit widget is rolling out globally to provide real-time updates on delays and transit conditions.

For developers and businesses, these updates signal a major shift in how consumers discover and interact with local services. By integrating directly with transaction platforms like Toast and Uber Eats, Google is positioning Maps as a high-intent funnel for local commerce. Software engineers and product managers in the travel, hospitality, and food service sectors must now optimize their integrations and structured data to ensure their services are accurately surfaced and seamlessly actionable within Google's expanding agentic ecosystem.
