French artificial intelligence startup Mistral AI has opened a new research and engineering hub in Munich, Germany, to advance industrial applications and physics-based AI. The new facility will house specialized research teams and applied engineers working directly with enterprise partners. By establishing a physical presence in Europe's largest industrial economy, Mistral aims to deploy its open-weight model architecture to provide sovereign AI solutions that run locally on customer infrastructure under European law.

A primary focus of the Munich office is Physics AI, which simulates physical phenomena like fluid dynamics, material deformation, and thermal behavior to accelerate heavy industry calculations. This initiative builds on Mistral's acquisition of Emmi AI in May 2026, which brought more than 30 specialized physicists, researchers, and engineers into the company. These experts specialize in large-scale modeling for structural mechanics and multi-physics simulations, helping to reduce simulation times that previously took days.

Mistral is already collaborating with major German enterprises, including BMW for crash simulations and Siemens Energy for industrial applications. Additionally, the firm has partnered with the Technical University Munich and Professor Dr. Nikolaus A. Adams to use wind tunnel facilities for creating automotive aerodynamics digital twins. This research aims to fuse real-time sensor data with offline simulations to deliver aerodynamic predictions in real time.

To support these compute-heavy workloads and bolster European technological sovereignty, Mistral plans to build one gigawatt of European compute capacity by 2030. According to Mistral co-founder and CEO Arthur Mensch, the engineering challenges of the next decade are being solved inside Germany's industrial base. The Munich hub will anchor the company's hiring across research, engineering, and applied AI roles as it scales its operations.
