Announced at its DevDay event, OpenAI's new Pages application is a collaborative document editor housed within a new Space tab in ChatGPT. This Space tab, which replaces the old Library while keeping the Projects tab intact, serves as a hub where teams can store files and build pages, spreadsheets, and upcoming slides. The Pages interface uses a block-based system similar to Notion, allowing users to organize headings, paragraphs, and tables, as well as link sub-pages. A floating toolbar enables text formatting, commenting, and direct editing requests to ChatGPT.

The tool allows multiple users to co-edit documents simultaneously, utilizing their own AI assistants to generate text, images, and interactive visualizations. Authors can also embed prompt blocks to guide readers in exploring the document. Pages can connect to external repositories like Google Drive. Currently, the feature is available on the web and desktop apps for ChatGPT Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers, with mobile devices restricted to read-only access.

This release positions OpenAI against established giants like Microsoft, Google, and Notion, as well as Anthropic, which recently added rich text editing and slide creation to Claude. Microsoft also recently updated Copilot to allow document creation within its app. The stakes are high, as Gartner projects enterprise spending on AI assistants will surge from $17 billion in 2025 to $71 billion by 2030.

For IT administrators and knowledge workers, this shift means AI is transitioning from a personal assistant into a shared workspace. However, adopting Pages requires entire teams to migrate their workflows and trust OpenAI with collaborative data. Practitioners must weigh the convenience of native AI generation against the robust permission structures and established habits of entrenched platforms like Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace.
