SpaceX and Tesla have announced plans to construct Terafab, a massive semiconductor manufacturing facility in Grimes County, Texas, with an initial investment of $16.8 billion. Located outside Houston, the site is projected to feature more than 100 million square feet of manufacturing space. Elon Musk described the planned facility on social media as "the largest and most valuable building on Earth" to highlight its unprecedented scale.

The companies are building the facility to address a massive internal demand for computing power, which they estimate will exceed 1 terawatt of compute. This figure surpasses the current global supply of chips. Terafab will serve as an all-in-one hub for developing, packaging, and testing advanced logic and memory chips. Rather than drawing from local groundwater, the facility will utilize water from the nearby Gibbons Creek Reservoir to mitigate environmental concerns.

The custom silicon produced at the Texas plant will power a variety of advanced systems. These include processors for Tesla's Optimus humanoid robots and autonomous Cybercabs, alongside high-power chips designed for SpaceX's upcoming space-based data centers. The project represents a major step toward vertical integration following the merger of SpaceX and xAI into SpaceXAI earlier this year, which preceded SpaceX's record-breaking public offering in June. Intel is also slated to participate in the project, though the exact nature of its involvement remains undisclosed.

For AI practitioners and hardware engineers, this massive undertaking signals a shift toward complete hardware independence by major tech players. By bypassing traditional foundry bottlenecks, SpaceX and Tesla are establishing a self-contained pipeline that could insulate their robotics and aerospace AI developments from global supply chain shocks. This move could force other enterprise AI developers to reconsider their reliance on third-party chipmakers and look toward custom, vertically integrated silicon strategies.
