On August 7, 2026, xAI officially released Grok Imagine Image 2.0, making the upgraded model generally available to users. The model is accessible as the Quality Mode on grok.com/imagine as well as through the company's official iOS and Android mobile applications. While consumer access is live immediately, xAI noted that API access for developers is planned to arrive in the near future.

The update prioritizes native editing capabilities over external modifications. It introduces a magic wand tool for localized adjustments, precise segmentation tools, and a background removal feature that exports subjects with transparency. Users can also utilize multi-reference editing, which accepts up to five input images to eliminate manual compositing. Additionally, a smart-resize feature automatically recomposes a single image across nine different aspect ratios, ranging from a tall 1:2 banner to a wide 2:1 banner.

To assist with commercial workflows, xAI trained the model to handle complex typography and layout design, ensuring small text remains sharp within dense, multi-part illustrations. The release also includes pre-configured templates designed to streamline common tasks. These workflows cover product photography, professional headshots, e-commerce listings, gaming assets, and marketing posters, allowing users to generate assets by simply providing their own inputs.

According to public Arena leaderboards from August 7, 2026, the new model ranks second globally in both text-to-image generation and image editing. In these standings, OpenAI's gpt-image-2 holds the top spot, while xAI's entries—listed as grok-imagine-image-2 (low) and grok-imagine-image-quality—follow directly behind. Notably, xAI now lists its models under the SpaceXAI brand name. This branding change follows a May 6, 2026 compute agreement between Anthropic and SpaceXAI, as well as SpaceX's Nasdaq listing in June 2026.
