Autonomous Key uses AI to curb screen addiction

The newly launched Autonomous Key is a 3-inch physical NFC device priced at $9 that helps users manage screen time by physically locking distracting smartphone applications. Unlike purely digital blockers that rely on easily bypassed notifications, this device requires users to physically scan the key against their phone to regain access to locked apps for up to 60 minutes. This low price point significantly undercuts existing hardware competitors in the space, such as Blok at $29, Unpluq at $26.50, and Brick at $59.

The device is compatible with smartphones running Android 8.0 or later and iPhones running iOS 15 or later. It is currently in beta following a Kickstarter campaign and is available in 5 colors: pink, orange, blue, gray, and brown. The companion app features no subscription fees or premium tiers, and 1 key can pair with multiple devices. Notably, the app integrates AI-powered insights to track usage patterns, such as how often and when users unlock their apps. The companion software summarizes these habits with a "deliberately sassy personality" to discourage users from keeping the key too close.

For digital wellness practitioners and users seeking to break mindless scrolling habits, the physical friction introduced by the key represents a shift from willpower-based intervention to environmental design. However, early testing reveals some technical hurdles, such as the NFC scan occasionally requiring multiple attempts to register, making it less ideal for essential communication apps. Furthermore, if a user loses the key while apps are locked, they must currently uninstall and reinstall the companion app to regain access, though the company is developing a backup unlock method for a future update.
