US-based Auterion is supplying Ukraine with 50,000 AI-powered Skynode S kits to upgrade cheap Shrike drones, enabling autonomous target tracking even when communications are jammed.

US company Auterion is delivering 50,000 Skynode S strike kits to upgrade Ukrainian company SkyFall's Shrike kamikaze drones, which previously cost $400. This upgrade transforms the manual first-person view drones into autonomous weapons costing about $2,000 each. Funded by a $100 million contract backed by Germany and fulfilled by Auterion's Munich team, this deployment represents a massive shift toward AI-driven warfare. Auterion has also committed to delivering 33,000 additional strike kits by July 2025 under a separate $50 million Pentagon contract.

The Skynode S kit runs on a Western-made Arm system-on-a-chip costing just $18. It replaces traditional flight controllers with an AI-on-board microprocessor. Using only visual data from the Shrike's onboard camera, the system can track and strike moving targets up to half a mile away without relying on GPS. This allows the drone to bypass enemy radio jamming and terrain obstacles that block operator signals. Previously, manual Shrike drones successfully targeted armored tanks, artillery, and even two Russian Mi-28 helicopters worth up to $19 million each. The new AI capabilities contrast with mid-range $5,000 Hornet drones from Perennial Autonomy, or traditional Western precision munitions that cost six or seven figures per shot, which is 30 to 60 times the price of the upgraded Shrike.

For military practitioners, this technology radically lowers the barrier to entry for drone operations. Auterion's CEO, who visited Ukraine eight times to collaborate with local manufacturers, noted that operators can be trained in just 60 seconds because they only need to steer the drone toward a target and select it on a screen. Furthermore, future software updates will enable Auterion's Nemyx system, allowing a single operator to command an autonomous swarm. During a live-fire exercise at Camp Blanding in Florida, a single pilot successfully commanded 3 autonomous drones to strike 3 separate targets. This swarm intelligence allows drones to dynamically coordinate, prioritize high-value targets, and avoid wasting multiple assets on a single objective, all while keeping a human in the loop for the final decision.
